About the album

The night before Icon was due in September 2025, Brent Faiyaz sent his team a group text calling the whole thing off. He scrapped the planned lead single and video too, then sent over a new song, "Have To," instead. The album finally arrived in February 2026 on ISO Supremacy and UnitedMasters, with no guest features at all, as the follow-up to his 2023 mixtape Larger than Life, which had debuted at No. 11 on the Billboard 200.

Faiyaz shares production with a deep bench, Raphael Saadiq, Chad Hugo, Benny Blanco, Sonder's Dpat, Paperboy Fabe and Tommy Richman among them. The sound is 90s-style R&B laced with nu-disco and electronic touches, his multi-tracked voice over keyboards, guitars and horns. "White Noise" opens with a string-heavy, cinematic swell, Pitchfork's Nina Corcoran heard Michael Jackson and the best of 90s Usher in "World Is Yours," and "Have To" glows with crisp 80s synths and fuzzy falsetto. Cole Bennett directed the video for "Wrong Faces."

Variety's Jem Aswad compared that layered voice to Mary J. Blige, Prince and Beyoncé. Not bad for an album that was very nearly postponed by group chat.
