Bob Moses' 2015 debut album Days Gone By as a 2LP set, with "Tearing Me Up," "Talk" and "Like It Or Not."
This 2LP set comes in a gatefold jacket. Days Gone By earned the Vancouver-born duo a Juno nomination for Electronic Album of the Year.
Bob Moses is two people, and neither of them is called Bob. Tom Howie and Jimmy Vallance went to high school together in Vancouver, lost touch, then ran into each other again in New York in 2011. A couple of EPs on Scissor and Thread later, Domino asked them for an album, and they recorded it in a former candlestick factory in Brooklyn that had been carved up into studio spaces.
The sound sits between the dance floor and the singer-songwriter's notebook. Howie's warm, weary vocals ride deep house grooves and live guitar, so "Tearing Me Up" and "Talk" work just as well at 2 a.m. in a club as on headphones on the walk home. "Like It Or Not" opens with a slow, glowing build, "Before I Fall" and "Too Much Is Never Enough" go darker and dreamier, and the title track "Days Gone By" brings the mood home.
AllMusic called them the masters of restrained bliss house, and Howie described the album's theme as melancholy with a sense of hope. It's an album that rewards being played in the dark, which, given the candlestick factory, feels about right.
