Dev Hynes's 2013 second album as Blood Orange as a 2LP set, a love letter to New York with "Chamakay" and "You're Not Good Enough."
This 2LP set comes with a colour insert and a download card. Pitchfork ranked Cupid Deluxe No. 35 among the 200 best albums of the 2010s, and it features Caroline Polachek, Skepta and Dirty Projectors' David Longstreth.
Dev Hynes spent the years between Blood Orange albums writing and producing for Solange and Sky Ferreira, and Cupid Deluxe is where he finally turned that talent on his own songs. He said the record was about New York, moving from Brooklyn to Manhattan and the unsteady feeling of life in transition.
"Chamakay" opens with Caroline Polachek's voice gliding over steel drums, and "You're Not Good Enough" is pure slinky 80s funk-pop with Samantha Urbani. David Longstreth turns up on "No Right Thing" with extra production from Clams Casino, Skepta lands a verse on "High Street," and "Always Let U Down" reworks a Mansun song into a late-night soul ballad. Saxophones, clarinet and DJ Ginyard's bass keep it all warm and human, and Adam Bainbridge of Kindness adds arrangements and vocals to "On the Line" and "Time Will Tell."
It came out in November 2013 and has grown in stature since. Hynes plays nearly everything on it himself, which keeps the rehearsal schedule pleasantly simple.
