Twenty years after their debut, The Black Angels re-recorded Passover from the ground up with producer Dave Sardy (Oasis, LCD Soundsystem, Modest Mouse), and it arrives first as an RSD Black Friday 2LP. Expect bigger riffs, deeper low end and the same drone that made the original a psych touchstone.
Passover came out in 2006, written during the Iraq War, and its songs have since lived through thousands of shows around the world. Each one changed a little night after night, and these recordings capture what they became.
Working with Dave Sardy, the Austin band set out to realize the songs as they sound now rather than recreate the past: heavier, richer in texture and more expansive, with every bit of the original's raw power.
The themes of violence, disillusionment and resistance still land hard two decades on.
For anyone who wore out the first pressing, this is a new way into the same dark, droning world.
"Shading their stomping groove with echo and drone, this band is something wonderful: spellbinding."
Liam Colle, PopMatters (on the 2006 original)
