Big Wreck's 1997 debut In Loving Memory Of..., on vinyl for the first time, with "The Oaf" and "That Song."
This 2018 Linus reissue was the album's first vinyl pressing, made in Canada, with a printed inner sleeve and a download card that adds two bonus tracks. The album went double platinum in Canada, and "The Oaf" reached the top ten on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart.
Big Wreck started out as Berklee College of Music students in Boston, gigging between there and Toronto until Atlantic signed them. Ian Thornley wasn't meant to be the singer; the band couldn't find one, so he stepped up, and that voice, along with his guitar, became the sound of the band.
They made the record at Presence Studios in Toronto with Matt DeMatteo, while Chris Wardman produced "Fall Through The Cracks" and "Overemphasizing," a song that dates back to their first 1995 demo. "That Song" and "Blown Wide Open" both went top ten on Canada's alternative chart, "Under The Lighthouse" was a Canadian single, and "The Oaf" turned Thornley's big riffs and bigger voice into an anthem. The album arrived in October 1997, and Canada took to it hardest, giving the band four top 40 hits on the national singles chart.
Thornley and Brian Doherty brought the band back in 2010, and they have kept making records ever since. Not bad going for a group named after a rehearsal that fell apart.
