Arctic Monkeys' 2011 fourth album, recorded live off the floor in Los Angeles: "Piledriver Waltz," "Black Treacle," "Reckless Serenade" and the title track.
Suck It and See is Arctic Monkeys at their most romantic and tuneful, the bridge between the heavy desert rock of Humbug and the swagger of AM. Fans have been quietly calling it their favourite for years.
After going dark and heavy with Josh Homme on Humbug, Arctic Monkeys headed to Sound City in Los Angeles with longtime producer James Ford and made something lighter on its feet. Alex Turner wrote most of the songs on acoustic guitar in his Brooklyn flat, and the band cut them mostly live, so the record has a warm, jangly, slightly '60s glow.
Turner's lyrics are at their wittiest and most love-struck here: "Piledriver Waltz" (first heard on his Submarine soundtrack), "Reckless Serenade," "Love Is a Laserquest" and the swooning title track are among the prettiest songs the band has written, while "Don't Sit Down 'Cause I've Moved Your Chair" and "Brick by Brick" bring the riffs. It's the album that set up everything that came next.
