Anderson .Paak's 2016 breakthrough Malibu as a 10th anniversary 2LP set of Zoetrope picture discs, with "Come Down," "Am I Wrong" and "The Season / Carry Me."
This 10th anniversary edition spins on Zoetrope picture discs, which animate as they turn, in a gatefold jacket with an obi strip. Malibu earned a Grammy nomination for Best Urban Contemporary Album and an 85 on Metacritic.
A lot of people met Anderson .Paak on Dr. Dre's Compton in 2015, where he turned up on six songs. One of them, "Animals," had first been earmarked for his own album; Dre asked for it, and .Paak still had plenty left over. Malibu arrived in January 2016 and made him a star.
It's a warm, generous record about family and getting through hard times, sung and rapped from behind the drum kit, with four singles leading the way. The Austin Chronicle heard the grit of 90s hip hop in "Without You," 60s soul in "The Bird" and honey-dripped R&B in "Am I Wrong," which features ScHoolboy Q. The Game and Sonyae Elise join him on "Room in Here," and "The Season / Carry Me" moves from a strutting groove into a moving family story. Consequence compared its scope to Stevie Wonder's Innervisions, and Exclaim! called it a rose from concrete.
Pitchfork ranked "Come Down" among the best songs of 2016. He plays drums while he sings, which is the kind of multitasking the rest of us save for eating lunch at our desks.
