Yusef Lateef's beautiful 1961 album Eastern Sounds from Craft's Original Jazz Classics series, blending jazz with Middle Eastern and Asian sounds: "Blues for the Orient" and "Love Theme from Spartacus."
Eastern Sounds is a gentle, mesmerizing classic, an early and influential fusion of jazz with global music, played on saxophone, flute, oboe and exotic reed instruments.
Recorded for Prestige's Moodsville label with pianist Barry Harris, bassist Ernie Farrow and drummer Lex Humphries, the album pairs Lateef's warm tenor and exotic woodwinds with modal melodies and lilting grooves.
"The Plum Blossom" features the Chinese globular flute, "Blues for the Orient" sways on the oboe, and his tender "Love Theme from Spartacus" and "Don't Blame Me" are lovely.
A gentle, mesmerizing classic. Eastern sounds, for any time of day.
