Chet Baker's 1959 all-instrumental ballad album, with Bill Evans, Pepper Adams and Kenny Burrell: "Alone Together," "How High the Moon" and "September Song."
Chet, sometimes called The Lyrical Trumpet of Chet Baker, is a dream-team session of late-night ballads, with Bill Evans on piano, Herbie Mann on flute and Pepper Adams on baritone sax.
By the late '50s Chet Baker was as famous for his singing as his trumpet, but on Chet he lets the horn do all the talking. Recorded for Riverside in New York in December 1958 and January 1959, it's a gorgeous set of slow standards with an all-star band: Bill Evans, Kenny Burrell, Paul Chambers, Herbie Mann, Pepper Adams and Connie Kay or Philly Joe Jones on drums.
"Alone Together," "It Never Entered My Mind," "'Tis Autumn" and "September Song" are played with the soft, aching tone that made Chet a legend. Put it on after midnight with the lights down low.
