About the album

They called him the Swamp Fox, and it fit. Tony Joe White grew up on a cotton farm in Goodwill, Louisiana, fell for Lightnin' Hopkins records, and started writing songs after hearing Bobbie Gentry's "Ode to Billie Joe." What came out was a sound all his own: low, growling vocals over murky guitar, somewhere between country, blues and soul.

Collected follows that sound across the decades. "Rainy Night In Georgia" is the song he wrote and Brook Benton made famous; "Roosevelt And Ira Lee (Night Of The Mossacin)" and "Groupy Girl" are prime early swamp rock; "Steamy Windows" came by way of his friend Mark Knopfler, who was producing Tina Turner at the time. Later gems like "Ain't Going Down This Time" and "On The Return To Muscle Shoals" show the voice getting deeper and the grooves getting slower, in the best way.

Elvis Presley, Tom Jones and Joe Bonamassa all took a run at "Polk Salad Annie," and White toured with everyone from Creedence to Eric Clapton. Twenty-odd songs on four sides is a generous helping; pour something cold and let it simmer.
