![The Smiths: Meat Is Murder [WARNER]](https://cdn.shoplightspeed.com/shops/621399/files/33633923/1652x1652x2/new-vinyl-the-smiths-meat-is-murder-warner.jpg)
Meat Is Murder, the Smiths' 1985 UK number one album: "The Headmaster Ritual," "That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore," "Rusholme Ruffians" and "Barbarism Begins at Home."
Meat Is Murder was the Smiths' only UK number one studio album, and it shows Johnny Marr's guitar and Morrissey's wit at their most adventurous.
The Smiths' second album finds the band stretching out: Johnny Marr's chiming, layered guitars head into rockabilly, funk and psychedelia, Andy Rourke's bass is superb, and Morrissey's lyrics take aim at schools, cruelty and injustice with his trademark mix of humour and passion.
"The Headmaster Ritual" opens with one of Marr's finest riffs, "Rusholme Ruffians" is a rollicking fairground song, "That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore" is gorgeous, and "Barbarism Begins at Home" shows off a funky, extended groove.
