Stan Getz's 1967 quartet album Sweet Rain, with a 25-year-old Chick Corea on piano, Ron Carter on bass and Grady Tate on drums.
This 180g reissue is remastered and comes in a gatefold jacket. Sweet Rain caught Getz in a searching, modern mood, and Michael Gibbs's title tune became a standard on the strength of his reading.
After the bossa nova boom made him a household name, Stan Getz could have played it safe for years. Instead, when vibraphonist Gary Burton left his quartet at the end of 1966, Getz went looking for a young pianist with big ideas and found Chick Corea, then just 25. Corea had come up playing with Mongo Santamaría and Herbie Mann, and Getz began folding his advanced ideas about harmony and meter straight into the band's sound.
Creed Taylor produced the session at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Englewood Cliffs on March 30, 1967, with Ron Carter and Grady Tate rounding out the band. Corea's "Litha" and "Windows" bookend the album, Jobim's "O Grande Amor" brings back the Brazilian glow of Getz/Gilberto, and Dizzy Gillespie's "Con Alma" swings hard. The title track, by Michael Gibbs, is Getz at his tenderest.
Corea said those months with Getz taught him a lot of discipline, and the two teamed up again years later on Captain Marvel. Put it on late in the evening with the lights low; the rain, happily, stays on the record.
