Pulp's 1994 breakthrough His 'n' Hers as a 25th anniversary 2LP set on 180g vinyl, with "Babies," "Lipgloss" and "Do You Remember The First Time?"
This 25th anniversary 2LP set was remastered and cut at Abbey Road Studios, on 180g vinyl in a deluxe gatefold. His 'n' Hers reached No. 9 in the UK, went gold and was nominated for the 1994 Mercury Prize.
Pulp had been at it for over a decade before most of Britain noticed, and His 'n' Hers is where it all came together. Jarvis Cocker's Sheffield band landed at Island with producer Ed Buller and a set of songs about bedsits, net curtains and the awkward thrill of other people's lives.
"Joyriders" sets the tone, "Lipgloss" glitters, and "Babies" is the great Pulp story-song, nosy and irresistible. "Do You Remember The First Time?" is pure anthem, "She's A Lady" borrows a little from Gloria Gaynor, and "David's Last Summer" closes the album in near-spoken word. Candida Doyle's Farfisa and Stylophone and Russell Senior's violin give it that thrift-shop glamour, and Nick Banks is credited on fire extinguisher. Steve Mackey's bass keeps the whole glittery operation moving.
Q readers later voted it the seventieth greatest album of all time, and it set the stage for Different Class. Few writers have made a trip to the shops sound quite so much like a heist.
