Pharoah Sanders' 1969 spiritual jazz landmark Karma in the Verve Acoustic Sounds series on 180g vinyl, with the 32-minute "The Creator Has a Master Plan."
Ryan K. Smith remastered this Acoustic Sounds edition from the original analog tapes at Sterling Sound, and Quality Record Pressings pressed it on 180g vinyl for a gatefold jacket. Pitchfork ranked Karma No. 53 among the greatest albums of the 1960s.
Thirty-two minutes is a long time for a radio station to commit to anything, yet "The Creator Has a Master Plan" got FM airplay all the same. Recorded on February 14, 1969, for Impulse!, Karma was Pharoah Sanders' third album as a leader and became his most popular and acclaimed, a cornerstone of spiritual jazz from a saxophonist who had come up alongside John Coltrane.
Sanders wrote the piece with vocalist Leon Thomas, whose yodelling chant floats over a loping, mantra-like groove. Lonnie Liston Smith plays piano, Julius Watkins adds French horn and James Spaulding flute, with Reggie Workman and Richard Davis both on bass, Billy Hart on drums and Nathaniel Bettis on percussion. It opens with a suspended prelude that nods to A Love Supreme, settles into that groove, then lets Sanders loose with split reeds, overblowing and multiphonics before coming home. The short "Colors" closes side two with Ron Carter and Freddie Waits.
Jazzwise listed it among the 100 jazz albums that shook the world, The New Yorker named it an essential jazz album, and The Gun Club covered the title piece in 1984. Acid jazz and hip hop artists have been borrowing that groove ever since. Not bad for a Valentine's Day session.
