Oliver Nelson's 1961 Impulse! classic The Blues and the Abstract Truth in the Acoustic Sounds Series on 180g vinyl, with Freddie Hubbard, Eric Dolphy and Bill Evans.
The Acoustic Sounds Series puts this one on remastered 180g vinyl in a gatefold jacket. It's Nelson's most acclaimed album, home of the jazz standard "Stolen Moments," and in 2026 the Library of Congress added it to the National Recording Registry.
Some of the most famous jazz albums are remembered for a soloist. This one is remembered for its writing. Oliver Nelson, a saxophonist who would go on to become one of the great arrangers, took the humble blues and bent it into new shapes, and assembled a lineup in February 1961 that still makes jaws drop: Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Eric Dolphy on alto and flute, Bill Evans on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Roy Haynes on drums, with George Barrow's baritone sax quietly holding the voicings together.
"Stolen Moments" opens the album, a 16-bar minor-key theme that has since been recorded by countless players. "Hoe-Down" borrows a spark from Aaron Copland's Rodeo, "Cascades" stretches the old AABA form to 56 bars, and side two settles into three blues of a more traditional cut, with Paul Chambers opening "Teenie's Blues" on bass. Creed Taylor produced it for the young Impulse! label.
DownBeat's Don DeMicheal reckoned Hubbard played some of his best solos on record here, and Colin Larkin later placed it in his All Time Top 1000 Albums. It's the sort of album that turns casual listeners into people who read the liner notes, which is a lovely problem to have.
