Charles Mingus's 1963 masterpiece The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady from Verve's audiophile Acoustic Sounds Series, a single continuous jazz ballet in six movements.
The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady is one of the greatest jazz albums ever recorded, a passionate, orchestral and astonishingly expressive suite.
Recorded in one January 1963 session with an eleven-piece band, Mingus composed a continuous work, partly written as a ballet, blending big-band swing, flamenco guitar, Ellington's lushness and fierce, wailing solos, shaped with innovative studio overdubs.
"Solo Dancer" opens with swaggering, growling brass, "Duet Solo Dancers" glides and sways, "Group Dancers" features Jay Berliner's dazzling Spanish guitar, and the final suite is a breathtaking, emotional whirlwind.
One of the greatest jazz albums ever recorded. Mingus, magnificent.
