Joni Mitchell's 1976 road album Hejira in its 2024 remaster, with Jaco Pastorius on fretless bass: "Coyote," "Amelia" and "Refuge of the Roads."
Bernie Grundman remastered this 2024 edition under Joni Mitchell's own supervision, and it comes in a gatefold jacket with a printed inner sleeve. Hejira reached No. 11 in the UK, where it went silver.
Canadian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Joni Mitchell's eighth studio album, Hejira, came out in 1976 on Asylum Records and captures the essence of her time on the road in 1975 and 1976, with lyrically rich, sprawling songs that explore themes of travel and self-reflection. The album features standout contributions from jazz musicians, including Jaco Pastorius on fretless bass, Larry Carlton on guitar, and drummer John Guerin, whose jazz-infused sounds perfectly complement Mitchell's introspective songwriting.
Peaking at No. 22 in Canada and No. 13 on the Billboard 200 in the U.S., where it was certified gold, it has since become a critical favourite, often hailed as one of Mitchell's finest works, showcasing her continued evolution as a pioneering artist in folk and jazz. The lead single, "Coyote," exemplifies the album's bold, creative spirit.
Six of the songs grew out of a single trip: Mitchell drove from Los Angeles to Maine with two friends, then made her way home alone by the Gulf of Mexico, and you can hear the highway in "Amelia" and "Refuge of the Roads." She wrote an album's worth of masterpieces on the move; most of us can't manage a shopping list in the passenger seat.
