Jessica Pratt's 2024 fourth album Here In The Pitch, nine hushed songs inspired by the 1960s Los Angeles dream, with "Life Is" and "World On A String."
This pressing comes with a lyric insert and a download code. Here In The Pitch scored 90 on Metacritic for universal acclaim, and Pitchfork gave it Best New Music.
Jessica Pratt has always sounded like she's singing from somewhere slightly out of time, and on her fourth album she went looking for the source: the hippie-era Los Angeles of the 1960s, and the shadowy figures on the darker side of the California dream.
For the first time she widened the frame. Long-time collaborator Al Carlson is back, joined by keyboardist Matt McDermott, bassist Spencer Zahn and percussionist Mauro Refosco, with Ryley Walker, Peter Mudge and Alex Goldberg also dropping by. "Life Is" opens with a rush of drums and strings, "World On A String" and "By Hook Or By Crook" have a wistful bossa sway, and "Better Hate" and "The Last Year" keep her quiet, hypnotic voice at the centre, while "Empires Never Know" and "Glances" round out side two. Pitchfork's Jeremy D. Larson likened her to a clockmaker, building another ornate clock to hang on the wall.
AllMusic praised the prismatic glow of the fuller arrangements and called it one of her most repeatable sets. At under half an hour it's built for flipping over and starting again, a habit we fully endorse.
