About the album

Gojira's major-label debut takes its title from François Truffaut's film about Victor of Aveyron, a boy found living wild in the French woods. Joe Duplantier used the idea to ask what freedom means for a musician with no boss, and the band went after more power, more density and more epic structures. They did pre-production at Le Studio des Milans in southwest France, then recorded in New York, with Duplantier co-producing alongside Josh Wilbur.

"Explosia" opens with a hammering blast, the title track and "The Axe" follow, and "Liquid Fire" and "Born In Winter" got videos of their own. Duplantier wrote "The Gift Of Guilt" about guilt passed down through generations, and The Guardian's Dom Lawson heard it as six minutes of sledgehammer sorrow on his way to a perfect score. The band toured it across North America with the Devin Townsend Project and The Atlas Moth.

Duplantier became a father during the sessions, which puts the title in a rather different light. We wouldn't suggest it as a lullaby, though some babies are made of sterner stuff.
