About the album

Freak Slug's 2024 debut, I Blow Out Big Candles, won her fans with fuzzy, self-taught grunge pop; Amulet goes somewhere stranger. The idea came from a spiritual reading that turned up a past life, and the album keeps one foot in that world (a medieval landscape where religious power was turned against women, which opener "Big Boy" walks straight into) and the other in this one, tracing how those old wounds still shape love and identity on "Black Eyes," "Jade Green" and "Wishing Bone."

Genovese wrote it over sessions in London and L.A. with her long-time collaborator Dylan Neustadter, and the sound has roughed up nicely. Driving bass lines, bouncy drums and washed-out guitars push her sedated, sugary vocals along, and the hooks still arrive as if they cost her no effort at all. The single "Girl, Intentions" shows both sides of her at once: sweet on the surface, with real bite underneath.
