Earth, Wind & Fire's 1971 debut comes back as a Rhino Reserve LP for RSD Black Friday. DownBeat gave it five stars, and "Love Is Life" put the young band on the soul singles chart.
Before the hits and the stadium shows, Maurice White's nine-piece band arrived on Warner Bros. with this bold mix of funk, soul, jazz and social consciousness. Joe Wissert produced it, and it reached No. 24 on Billboard's soul albums chart.
"Help Somebody" and "Moment Of Truth" open the LP with chant-like grooves, "Fan The Fire" brings the horns forward, and "This World Today" speaks to its moment.
It foreshadows the innovative sound that made them one of the decade's most influential groups.
"The debut for the nine-member Earth, Wind & Fire was as assured as that of any rock band from the '60s and early '70s."
