Dexter Gordon's 1962 Blue Note gem Go! in the Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series, on 180g vinyl cut by Kevin Gray from the analog masters.
This Classic Vinyl Series edition is a 180g pressing mastered by Kevin Gray from the original analog tapes. Go! is widely hailed as one of Gordon's greatest albums, earns five stars from AllMusic and joined the National Recording Registry in 2019.
Dexter Gordon was a tall man with a big sound and an unhurried way of getting to the point. On August 27, 1962, he walked into Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Englewood Cliffs with Sonny Clark on piano, Butch Warren on bass and Billy Higgins on drums, and Alfred Lion caught one of the most relaxed, swinging sessions in the Blue Note vaults.
"Cheese Cake," Gordon's own tune, opens with a riff that sticks to you for days. "I Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out to Dry" and "Where Are You" show off his big, warm ballad tone, "Love for Sale" gallops, and "Second Balcony Jump" and "Three O'Clock in the Morning" let the quartet stretch out. Ira Gitler's liner notes compared its easy feel to the best nightclub recordings.
Gordon soon moved to Europe and became a legend all over again, but Go! is the record that people tend to reach for first. Its title is either an instruction or a description; on the evidence, both.
