Cannonball Adderley's 1958 hard-bop classic Somethin' Else with Miles Davis, on blue vinyl for Blue Note's 85th anniversary: "Autumn Leaves" and "Love for Sale."
This blue vinyl edition, limited to 3,000 copies worldwide with an obi, comes from Blue Note's 85th anniversary Classic Vinyl Series. Miles Davis sits in as a sideman, wrote the title track and chose most of the songs.
The sole Blue Note album by legendary jazz alto saxophonist Cannonball Adderley, Somethin' Else opens with an exquisite performance of "Autumn Leaves." The band on Somethin' Else is quite literally something else: pianist Hank Jones, bassist Sam Jones, drummer Art Blakey and the legendary Miles Davis on trumpet.
Somethin' Else was recorded at the Van Gelder Studio in New Jersey. At the time of recording, Adderley was a member of Miles Davis's First Great Quintet. Davis plays several solos on the album, composed the title track and chose most of the material. This 2024 blue vinyl reissue of the timeless hard-bop classic, remastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes, arrives via the Blue Note 85 Classic Vinyl Series.
Davis credited Ahmad Jamal for the idea behind this "Autumn Leaves," and the tune stayed in his book for years. "One for Daddy-O," written by Nat Adderley for a Chicago DJ, ends with Davis asking producer Alfred Lion, "Is that what you wanted, Alfred?" Davis recorded "Love for Sale" again with his own sextet a couple of months later, which says plenty about how much he liked this arrangement.
