Avril Lavigne's 2004 second album Under My Skin, expanded with the bonus track "I Always Get What I Want," plus "My Happy Ending" and "Don't Tell Me."
This expanded edition adds "I Always Get What I Want" as a bonus track at the end of side two. Under My Skin debuted at No. 1 in Canada, the US and the UK, and won the 2005 Juno Award for Pop Album of the Year.
Having sold millions with Let Go, the kid from Napanee, Ontario, could easily have made the same record twice. Instead she went darker and heavier, writing much of Under My Skin with fellow Canadian Chantal Kreviazuk. The result came out on Arista in May 2004.
Kreviazuk's husband Raine Maida of Our Lady Peace produced five songs, including "Fall To Pieces," with Don Gilmore and Butch Walker handling the rest. Evanescence's Ben Moody co-wrote "Nobody's Home," and guitarist Evan Taubenfeld chipped in too. "Don't Tell Me" reached No. 5 in the UK, and "My Happy Ending" spent several weeks at No. 1 in Canada and gave her a fourth No. 1 on US pop radio. "Take Me Away," "Together" and "Forgotten" bring the crunch, "Slipped Away" is a tender farewell to her grandfather, and "He Wasn't" is pure pop-punk fun. "Nobody's Home" and "Fall To Pieces" followed as singles.
It sold 381,000 copies in its first US week and 63,000 in Canada, and went on to sell about 10 million copies worldwide, five times platinum here at home. Twenty-odd years on, it still makes a very strong case for the eyeliner.
