Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers' 1958 hard bop landmark Moanin' with Lee Morgan, Benny Golson and Bobby Timmons. Blue Note 85 Classic Vinyl edition on blue vinyl.
Moanin' is one of the quintessential hard bop records, and Bobby Timmons's gospel-tinged title tune became an instant classic.
Recorded on October 30, 1958, Moanin' marked Blakey's return to Blue Note. The LP was originally self-titled, but the runaway success of Timmons's "Moanin'" soon gave the album its name. Saxophonist Benny Golson wrote the rest of the originals, and this is the only US album to feature him with the Messengers.
"Are You Real" showcases the dynamic interplay between Golson and trumpeter Lee Morgan, "Along Came Betty" is a lyrical ballad, the three-part "Drum Thunder Suite" shows off Blakey's commanding drumming, "Blues March" swings with New Orleans spirit, and "Come Rain or Come Shine" gets a brisk, upbeat reading.
