Moanin' is one of the defining hard-bop albums, and its gospel-flavoured title track is one of the most famous tunes in jazz.
Drummer Art Blakey assembled a superb Jazz Messengers lineup for Moanin': a young Lee Morgan on trumpet, Benny Golson on tenor sax, Bobby Timmons on piano and Jymie Merritt on bass. Recorded at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in 1958, it swings with soul, grit and joy.
Bobby Timmons' "Moanin'" is an irresistible call-and-response classic, Golson's "Blues March" and "Along Came Betty" are timeless, and "The Drum Thunder Suite" shows off Blakey's power behind the kit.
