The Velvet Underground & Nico is the debut studio album by American rock group the Velvet Underground, created in collaboration with German singer Nico. It was released by Verve Records in March 1967. Much of the album was recorded in 1966 at Ludlow Street in New York City while the band was participating in Andy Warhol’s Exploding Plastic Inevitable tour. Warhol, who also designed the iconic album cover, acted as co-producer alongside Tom Wilson.

The album blends avant-garde experimentation with stark, minimalist, and rhythm-driven rock music. Frontman Lou Reed’s songwriting is marked by candid and provocative lyrics that explore drug use, prostitution, sadomasochism, and the realities of urban life. Its harsh, unconventional sound and controversial subject matter led to poor commercial performance and sharply divided critical opinion upon release. Several record stores banned the album, many radio stations declined to play it, and some magazines refused to run advertisements for it.

In the decades that followed, The Velvet Underground & Nico gained widespread recognition as a groundbreaking work far ahead of its time, earning spots on numerous “greatest albums” lists. The Observer ranked it first among the “50 Albums That Changed Music,” while Pitchfork named it the greatest album of the 1960s. Frequently described as the first true art-rock album, it has had a profound influence on a wide range of rock and alternative subgenres, including punk, garage rock, krautrock, post-punk, post-rock, noise rock, shoegaze, gothic rock, art punk, and indie rock.

Today, The Velvet Underground & Nico is widely regarded as one of the most influential albums in rock and pop history. In 2006, it was added to the Library of Congress’s National Recording Registry for its cultural, historical, and aesthetic significance, and in 2008 it was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame for its lasting artistic impact. Although it sold poorly at the time of release, the album has since achieved platinum certification in the United Kingdom for sales exceeding 300,000 copies. In 2023, Billboard ranked it number one on its list of “The 100 Best Album Covers of All Time.”
