Melodies is the eighth studio album by Japanese singer-songwriter Tatsuro Yamashita, released in June 1983. It marked his first LP on the Moon label, which at the time was distributed by Alfa Records.
In contrast to his earlier releases—many of which featured lyrics written primarily by Minako Yoshida—most of the tracks on Melodies were written solely by Yamashita. Exceptions include “Blue Midnight,” co-written with Yoshida, and a cover of “Guess I’m Dumb,” originally composed by Brian Wilson and Russ Titelman and first recorded by Glen Campbell in 1966.
Prior to the album’s release, “Koukiatsu Girl” was issued as the lead single, featuring chorus vocals by Mariya Takeuchi, whom Yamashita had married in 1982 before she temporarily stepped back from her music career.
The album’s most famous track, “Christmas Eve,” initially drew little attention when it was released as a 12-inch single in December 1983. However, the song gained widespread popularity after being featured in television commercials by the Central Japan Railway Company during the late 1980s and early 1990s. A CD single reissue in 1986 eventually became a major hit, reaching No. 1 on the Oricon chart in December 1989. Reissued multiple times over the years, “Christmas Eve” remained a perennial favorite, charting for more than 20 consecutive years and surpassing 1.8 million copies in total sales.
Driven largely by the enduring popularity of “Christmas Eve,” Melodies achieved sustained commercial success. It stands as Yamashita’s best-selling studio album, selling over 992,000 copies during its initial chart runs. A 30th anniversary reissue in 2013 added another 28,000 copies, bringing total sales to more than 1.02 million.
