Brasilian Skies is the fourth studio album by Japanese musician, producer, and composer Masayoshi Takanaka, released by Kitty Records on July 21, 1978. Originally issued on vinyl and cassette, the album combines jazz fusion with Brazilian influences such as bossa nova and samba, alongside elements of progressive rock and soul.
For the album, Takanaka traveled to Brazil in 1978, where he recorded part of the project at PolyGram’s studios in Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro. The remaining recordings were completed at Westlake Studios in Los Angeles, California. The combination of Brazilian musicians, rhythms, and Takanaka’s jazz-fusion style gives the album its distinctive tropical character.
To mark the album’s 40th anniversary, Takanaka embarked on a five-date Japanese tour in 2018 under the theme Brasilian Skies. The tour began in Tokyo on September 22 and concluded in Osaka on October 28. A live album recorded during his October 13 performance at Tokyo’s Hibiya Open-Air Concert Hall was later released on May 22, 2019.
