Miles Davis's 1970 jazz-rock landmark B***hes Brew as a 2LP set on 180g vinyl pressed in Germany, with "Pharaoh's Dance" and "Spanish Key."
This German-pressed 2LP set is on 180g vinyl in a gatefold jacket with liner notes. B***hes Brew became Davis's highest-charting album, won the 1971 Grammy for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album and went platinum in 2003.
The day after Woodstock wrapped up in August 1969, Miles Davis took a band into Columbia's Studio B in New York and spent three days pulling jazz somewhere new. He'd opened the door on In a Silent Way earlier that year, and on tour that summer his quintet had already been playing early versions of "Miles Runs the Voodoo Down," "Sanctuary" and "Spanish Key." This time he wanted the electric pianos, the guitar and the rock-loose rhythms turned all the way up.
Wayne Shorter, Dave Holland, Chick Corea and Jack DeJohnette came from the working band, with John McLaughlin, Joe Zawinul and others filling out a crowded room of keyboards, basses and drums. Davis set grooves and moods rather than charts, and producer Teo Macero cut, looped and stitched the long jams into finished pieces afterwards. "Pharaoh's Dance" sprawls across a whole side, "John McLaughlin" is named for the guitarist who drives it, and "Miles Runs the Voodoo Down" sits in a deep, slinky funk.
Columbia later expanded the sessions into a four-disc box, and in 2025 the Library of Congress added the album to the National Recording Registry. Which makes this, technically, a national treasure you're allowed to take home.
