Mac DeMarco's 2015 instrumental album Some Other Ones on canary yellow vinyl, nine slide-guitar sketches from "Little Pepper" to "Special K."
This canary yellow pressing was limited to 5,500 copies worldwide and gave the album its first proper vinyl edition. Mac wrote and recorded all nine tracks in five days in July 2015.
Every so often Mac DeMarco makes a record purely because he feels like it. In the summer of 2015, a month before his mini-album Another One, the Duncan, B.C.-born and Edmonton-raised songwriter shared Some Other Ones on Bandcamp, then took it down again, and fans spent the next eight years asking politely for it back.
He wrote and recorded the whole thing between July 4 and 8, 2015, at home in Far Rockaway, Queens, playing everything himself. There are no vocals, just warm, woozy slide guitar, mellow keys and that easygoing lo-fi sound, bridging his early records and the stripped-back albums to come. "Onion Man" and "Young Coconut" wobble along nicely, "Hachiko" is tender, and "Special K" closes on a sunny shrug. It also served as the soundtrack to a Brooklyn barbecue where Mac collected food bank donations. It's the sound of a songwriter noodling happily at home, and the warmth comes through in every wobbly note.
Captured Tracks finally gave it a wide issue in 2023, streaming and on vinyl. The track titles read rather like a shopping list, and the album makes an excellent soundtrack for actually doing the shopping.
