Hank Mobley's 1957 Blue Note sextet session, issued as BLP 1568, on 180g vinyl in mono as part of the Blue Note Classic Vinyl series.
This Blue Note Classic Vinyl series edition presses the original mono session on 180g vinyl. Mobley leads a sextet with Bill Hardman, Curtis Porter, Sonny Clark, Paul Chambers and Art Taylor through five long, swinging hard bop tracks.
Hank Mobley made so many fine records for Blue Note that some of them got lost in the stack. This one was cut at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Hackensack on June 23, 1957, with Alfred Lion producing, and came out the following year as BLP 1568, with a Francis Wolff photograph on the cover.
Mobley is in a relaxed, generous mood, sharing the front line with trumpeter Bill Hardman and Curtis Porter on alto and tenor. Porter wrote both "Mighty Moe And Joe" and "News," bluesy, hard-driving tunes that suit the three horns perfectly, while Mobley's own "Double Exposure" shows off his gift for a melody that sits just behind the beat. Sonny Clark, Paul Chambers and Art Taylor keep everything swinging, from Rodgers and Hart's "Falling In Love With Love" to Milt Jackson's "Bags' Groove."
Original pressings are now among the hardest Blue Notes to find, the sort collectors talk about in hushed tones. This one you can simply walk in and buy, which is very much how we prefer it.
