Freddie Hubbard's 1973 CTI album Keep Your Soul Together on 180g clear pink vinyl, a numbered Music On Vinyl edition.
This Music On Vinyl edition comes on 180g clear pink vinyl, limited to 1,000 numbered copies. DownBeat gave the album five stars, singling out George Cables and Junior Cook.
By 1973 Freddie Hubbard had already played with just about everyone in jazz, and on his fifth album for Creed Taylor's CTI label he sounds like a man who'd found his own groove and intended to stay in it. He wrote all four tunes and cut them at Van Gelder Studios that October.
The band is electric and loose: George Cables on electric piano, Junior Cook on tenor, Aurell Ray on guitar, Kent Brinkley and Ron Carter on bass, Ralph Penland on drums and Juno Lewis on percussion. "Brigitte" opens with a lyrical glide, the title track builds into a long, funky workout, "Spirits of Trane" tips its hat in its title, and "Destiny's Children" closes at full burn.
The DownBeat review said it showed exactly what Hubbard was playing live at the time. Four tracks, each around ten minutes, which is roughly how long it takes to stop pretending you're doing anything else.
