1971, UK, Embossed Box Sleeve, No Postcard, VG
First UK copies came in a laminated box-style sleeve with the title and band name embossed, and this one has it. The album reached No. 5 in the UK and No. 8 in the US. Critics point to it as a starting point for stoner rock and sludge metal.
Sabbath made their third album at Island Studios in London in February and April 1971. Rodger Bain produced, his last time with the band, and Tom Allom engineered. Vertigo put it out on 6 August 1971.
On the LP, Tony Iommi, who had lost two fingertips in a factory accident, tuned down a step and a half on Children of the Grave, Lord of This World and Into the Void to ease the string tension, and Geezer Butler tuned his bass to match.
