The first of the late Syd Barrett's two solo albums, The Madcap Laughs is a bit of a splatter in keeping with the onetime Pink Floyd frontman's troubled personality and reputation for bizarre antics but when the songs do come into proper focus - as they do on "Love You" and "Here I Go" - they prove the man was a master popsmith when he wanted to be. Floyd bandmates Roger Waters and David Gilmour lend a hand on half the tracks.
