Unbelievably, Chet Baker was just a trumpet player until he unveiled that golden voice to the world on Chet Baker Sings

Chet Baker's voice is so delicate and singular and, once you've heard it, so completely impossible to separate from his name that it's difficult to believe he was simply known as a trumpet player until, at the tender age of 24, he decided in 1954 to embark on a singing career, too. More unbelievable is the fact that seven of the tracks on 1956's Chet Baker Sings were actually culled from his very first vocal session. One can't really say that Baker had suddenly found his true calling because, obviously, he was pretty hot on the trumpet but what luck it must have been to find a second true calling.
