WAVE is the seventh studio album by Japanese singer-songwriter Anri, released by For Life Records on June 21, 1985. Coming after COOOL and Timely!!, the album continues the polished, sophisticated sound that made Anri one of the defining voices of 1980s Japanese pop.

The album blends city pop with funk, soul, jazz, and pop, combining Anri’s smooth vocals with prominent bass, percussion, synthesizers, and electric guitar. Its production has a distinctly summery feel, with many of the songs evoking beaches, nighttime drives, and the relaxed atmosphere of coastal Japan.

Among the standout tracks are “City Fiction,” “Yoake no Soldier,” “Long Island Beach,” “Wave,” “Lover’s Night,” and “16 (Sixteen) Beat.” “Kimama ni Reflection,” which had already been released as a single, was also included on the album.

Toshiki Kadomatsu, who had worked closely with Anri on Timely!! and COOOL, once again contributed to the album, helping with arrangements, vocals, guitar, and percussion. His involvement helped maintain the sleek, groove-heavy sound associated with Anri’s best-known work.

WAVE was also a commercial success, reaching number five on the Japanese Oricon album chart. While it didn’t have quite the cultural impact of Timely!!, it remains a strong example of Anri’s mid-1980s sound. With its bright production, catchy melodies, and laid-back summer atmosphere, WAVE feels like a natural continuation of the city-pop style she had helped popularize.
