2LP
The rare live album that stands as the one album to have in a band's classic catalogue - if you've gotta have just one - 1971's At Fillmore East is notable not just for its fiery display of the Georgia-bred Allman Brothers' insurmountable live chops but also the subtle technical accomplishments of producer Tom Dowd. For this live album isn't quite as "live" as it sounds: Dowd carefully edited some of the Allmans' sprawling, jazz-influenced jams down to lengths more appropriate to an LP, while also often seamlessly editing the final versions found here together from different performances of the same tune captured over a two-night stand at the New York venue. The six-man band (plus several guest performers) was paid $1,250 for each of those performances, by the way.
