About the album

Elektra wanted more songs, and The Stooges had a slight problem: they'd planned seven. Ron Asheton insisted there were more, Jac Holzman gave them five days, and the band came back from Michigan with "We Will Fall," "Real Cool Time" and "Not Right," plus an old Iggy Pop song, "Ann," revived when producer John Cale asked for one more. Dave Alexander's chant became the basis of "We Will Fall," and he sings on it too.

They recorded it at the Hit Factory in New York in April 1969. Cale, fresh out of the Velvet Underground, plays piano and sleigh bells on "I Wanna Be Your Dog" and viola on the droning "We Will Fall," while Iggy Pop, Ron and Scott Asheton and Dave Alexander keep everything else brutally simple. "1969" and "No Fun" became punk blueprints, and "Little Doll" grew out of a jam called Dance of the Romance. Joel Brodsky shot the cover photograph, and Danny Fields wrote the liner notes.

Iggy Pop and Holzman did the final mix themselves, and a decade later half the bands in London were borrowing its riffs. Few deadlines have been met quite so productively.
