The Roy Haynes Quartet's 1962 Impulse! classic Out of the Afternoon, with Roland Kirk, Tommy Flanagan and Henry Grimes, in the Verve Acoustic Sounds series.
This Verve Acoustic Sounds reissue is remastered on 180g vinyl in a gatefold jacket, pressed in the USA. The quartet pairs Haynes with the multi-horned Roland Kirk, and "Snap Crackle" is named for the drummer's own famous nickname.
Roy Haynes played with Lester Young, Charlie Parker, Bud Powell, Sarah Vaughan and John Coltrane, and is among the most recorded drummers in jazz. His own records as a leader are where you really hear what made him special, and this one, cut at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs on May 16 and 23, 1962, with Bob Thiele producing for Impulse!, is the one people return to.
Tommy Flanagan's piano and Henry Grimes's bass keep things elegant, and Roland Kirk brings tenor sax, manzello, stritch, flute and, yes, nose flute. "Moon Ray" opens with a gorgeous slow burn, "Fly Me to the Moon (In Other Words)" swings sweetly, and Haynes's own "Raoul," "Snap Crackle" and "Long Wharf" show off his crisp, conversational drumming. "Some Other Spring" closes on a tender ballad. Through it all Haynes plays like a conversation partner rather than a timekeeper, nudging, answering and pushing the soloists somewhere new.
Haynes kept playing into his late nineties and celebrated his birthdays on stage at the Blue Note in New York. Kirk could play three horns at once here, and Haynes, by all accounts, kept up with every one of them.
