The Marcus King Band's 2018 album Carolina Confessions on 180g vinyl, produced by Dave Cobb in Nashville.
This pressing comes on 180g vinyl in a gatefold jacket with a printed lyric inner sleeve. Dave Cobb produced and mixed it at RCA Studio A, and it went to No. 2 on the Billboard Blues Albums chart.
Marcus King was playing gigs as a pre-teen sideman for his father, the Greenville, South Carolina bluesman Marvin King, so he knew his way around a bandstand long before he could drive to one. By his third album with the band he had a Nashville studio, a top-shelf producer and a set of songs about leaving home and longing for it.
Dave Cobb, the producer behind records by Chris Stapleton and Sturgill Simpson, brought them into RCA Studio A and kept things warm and live. "Confessions" opens with a slow-burning guitar, "Where I'm Headed" and "Homesick" swing between soul and Southern rock, and "How Long" was co-written with Dan Auerbach and Pat McLaughlin. Jack Ryan's drums and Stephen Campbell's bass give "8 A.M." and "Side Door" plenty of punch, "Remember" and "Autumn Rains" slow things to a soulful simmer, and "Goodbye Carolina" closes the book.
It was the band's first entry on Billboard's Top Current Albums chart. A guitarist who sings like this is, frankly, showing off, but we'll allow it.
