1955, Canada, A-Side has Hazing/ B-Side Borat, Vocal Jazz - Disc VG
This is a first Canadian pressing, made by Quality Records in Toronto, with the large EmArcy logo and silver rim on the labels. On it a 21-year-old Quincy Jones arranges for Merrill and Clifford Brown. The disc grades VG.
Helen Merrill made her first album at Fine Sound Studios in New York from 22 to 24 December 1954. Jones arranged and conducted, and Brown played trumpet. Jimmy Jones is on piano and Barry Galbraith on guitar throughout.
The rhythm section changes across the LP. Milt Hinton and Osie Johnson play on four songs, while Oscar Pettiford, on bass and cello, and Bobby Donaldson play on the other three. Brown had cut a similar record with Sarah Vaughan the week before. He died in a car crash in 1956, and Merrill recorded a tribute album to him in 1995.
