Florence + the Machine's 2015 album How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful on 2LP, with "Ship to Wreck" and "What Kind of Man."
The full album spread across four sides on a 2LP set. How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful debuted at No. 1 in the UK, the U.S. and Canada, made the Mercury Prize shortlist and picked up five Grammy nominations.
After two albums of harps, choirs and cathedral-sized drama, Florence Welch did the bravest thing a maximalist can do: she took a year off and then turned it down a notch (by her standards, which still means horns). How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful came out in May 2015, made mostly with producer Markus Dravs, and it's her most direct record, folding folk, blues and gospel into songs about heartbreak and holding yourself together.
It also turned out to be the one that conquered North America: No. 1 in the U.S. with 137,000 units, the band's first chart-topper there, No. 1 in Canada and her third straight No. 1 in the UK. "Ship to Wreck" and "What Kind of Man" are the big swinging singles, "Queen of Peace" and "Delilah" followed, and the album landed on the Mercury Prize shortlist and earned five Grammy nominations. Entertainment Weekly called it "Florence + the Machine's most raw and stripped-down album to date," and on two LPs it gets all the room it needs to swell. For anyone who's ever sung along to a breakup song with both arms in the air, this one's yours.
