At first blush, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club's 2001 debut LP can sound like a pastiche of shoegazer and sleaze-rock influences from Ride and Love and Rockets to the Stooges and the Jesus and Mary Chain. The more time you spend with it, though, BRMC sounds less like the sum of these parts and more like a worthy addition to that lineage in its own right - which they would indeed become over the 20 years to follow. One of the finest first records of the 21st century.
