The Beatles' "everything but the kitchen sink" moment

The Beatles didn't really conceive of the strikingly scattered self-titled 1968 double-LP commonly known as the "White Album" as a grand, unified statement worthy of two discs but instead simply threw everything they had at it, all at once. And yet, somehow all of these disparate songs - from delicate ballads like "Julia" and "Blackbird" to druggy opuses like "Dear Prudence" and "Happiness Is A Warm Gun" to straight-up rockers like "Birthday" and "Helter Skelter" to the patience-testing tape-loop collage "Revolution 9" - work together precisely because the Beatles had the audacity to assemble so many songs that shouldn't work together in one place.
